Niger Delta Activists Forum calls for dialogue, peaceful resolutions by communities and investors

The Niger Delta Activists Forum (NDAF) has called for dialogue in the affairs of the Niger Delta region, even as the group lamented over the disregard and disrespect of the Niger Delta people by an oil company operating in the region.

In a press statement distributed to journalists on Sunday, June 17, the group said they have been inundated with endless piles and volumes of complaints from host communities over "gross violations of their right, non implementation of GMoU agreements, pollution of their land and water ways, destruction of their means of subsistence living amidst others."

The statement was signed by conveners of NDAF, Comrade Success Jack and Comrade Bristol Emmanuel.

According to them, "our disposition as a group have been to constantly advise them to approach constituted government bodies, explore all avenues of dialogue and arbitration without resorting to violence or breakdown of law and order."

They informed that in November 2017, they prevented a mass mobilization from host communities to carry out blockade on the East/West road and oil facilities in Rivers and Bayelsa states by calling the attention of the Department of State Security (DSS) to the plan.

They however thanked the Rivers state House of Assembly, people from the various host communities and the Department of State Security (DSS) for their various attempt at settling the impasse.

They however called the attention of all relevant government agencies to the fact that the communities have resolved to forcefully ensure their demands are met, adding that "any effort to remedy things is still highly welcomed."

Part of the statement read: "We are aware from our interactions with these people ,that at any time from 00hrs on Wednesday 20 June, 'Operation Zero Barrels for NAOC' begins.

"We call on NAOC to immediately embrace dialogue rather than being oppressive. Let them give peace a chance and activate the process for a win win outcome.

"You cannot continue to violate our people, break and disregard our laws and disobey our government.

"At this juncture, we are clearly at our limits of providing leadership and peaceful coordination. We hereby leave the situation to float on with the communities to continue in whatever direction they have chosen for and by themselves.

"We remain committed to volunteering to continue to engage with our people for peaceful resolutions."
